Psyche is the Greek word for life in the sense of breath, soul or spirit (ψυχή). In Greek and Roman mythology, Psyche is a winged goddess, symbolising the personification of soul. In psychology, the psyche is the epitome of human mind.
ᾧ ἂν τί ἐγγένηται σώματι ζῶν ἔσται;
ὧι ἂν ψυχή, ἔφη.
What would it be that, when present in a body, renders it alive?;
Psyche, he said.
(Plato, Phaedo, 105c)
